Values…

"Supported Living starts off with a fundamental belief that
every person has the right to lead their own life - determine how they live,
with whom they live, who provides them with help and support
and how they live their lives."

P Kinsella (2001). Supported Living. The Changing Paradigm - from control to freedom.

Supported Living is based on these values and principles

Every person is unique.

The supports a person with disability may need must fit their own needs, goals and interests.

People have control over their own lives.

Every person is at the centre of their life and planning should put the person at the centre, making choices about their home and their goals.

Lives change.

To take into account the changes in people's lives and goals, supports must change too.

All people make contributions.

All people with disability contribute to society. Some people with disability need support to have opportunities to contribute through their work, leisure, and relationships.

People belong together.

People with disability need to belong to the same workplaces, clubs, associations and ordinary places that people without disability belong to. People with and without disability need opportunities to have relationships with each other.

People with disability are treated as adults.

People may need support to be treated the same as people their age without disability.

Cultural backgrounds are respected.

Where a person with disability gets support it should be sensitive to their cultural background.

People with disability live in a home they choose.

Home is a safe place, free from abuse and neglect and like other people's homes in the neighbourhood.

People with disability have secure funding

The supports a person may need are guaranteed for life.
